Juniper Jnos up to 6.3 IPv6 Neighbor Discovery input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Juniper Jnos up to 6.3. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component IPv6 Neighbor Discovery. This manipulation causes input validation. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-2476. There is not any exploit available. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Juniper Jnos up to 6.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component IPv6 Neighbor Discovery. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) implementation in (1) FreeBSD 6.3 through 7.1, (2) OpenBSD 4.2 and 4.3, (3) NetBSD, (4) Force10 FTOS before E7.7.1.1, (5) Juniper JUNOS, and (6) Wind River VxWorks 5.x through 6.4 does not validate the origin of Neighbor Discovery messages, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (loss of connectivity) or read private network traffic via a spoofed message that modifies the Forward Information Base (FIB).

The weakness was released 10/03/2008 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-2476 since 05/28/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39001 (HP-UX PHNE_38680 : HP-UX Running IPv6, Remote Denial of Service (DoS) and Unauthorized Access (HPSBUX02407 SSRT080107 rev.1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116191 (HP-UX Running IPv6, Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02407)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45601), Tenable (39001), SecurityFocus (BID 31529†), OSVDB (48744†) and Secunia (SA32112†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-46293, VDB-44315, VDB-43997 and VDB-43942. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
