Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.0 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function xfs_readlink of the file fs/xfs/xfs_vnodeops.c of the component XFS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the xfs_readlink function in fs/xfs/xfs_vnodeops.c in XFS in the Linux kernel 2.6, when CONFIG_XFS_DEBUG is disabled, allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via an XFS image containing a symbolic link with a long pathname.
The issue has been introduced in 12/18/2003. The weakness was shared 10/26/2011 as Bug 749156 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-4077 since 10/18/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/19/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2869 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68669 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2012-2003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350692 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2012-055).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68669), SecurityFocus (BID 50366†), Secunia (SA46591†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33622†). The entries VDB-4553, VDB-4488, VDB-4536 and VDB-4523 are related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
