Linux Kernel 2.6.24 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.24 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The i915 driver in (1) drivers/char/drm/i915_dma.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.24 on Debian GNU/Linux and (2) sys/dev/pci/drm/i915_drv.c in OpenBSD does not restrict the DRM_I915_HWS_ADDR ioctl to the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) master, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted ioctl call, related to absence of the DRM_MASTER and DRM_ROOT_ONLY flags in the ioctl s configuration.

The bug was discovered 10/17/2008. The weakness was presented 10/20/2008 by Olaf Kirch (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3831 since 08/27/2008. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 270 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67772 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2008-1017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117210 (CentOS Security Update for kernel (CESA-2008:1017)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45963), Tenable (67772), SecurityFocus (BID 31792†), OSVDB (49183†) and Secunia (SA32315†). See VDB-44544 and VDB-44542 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
