This vulnerability affects the function parse_master of the component Media Player. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the parse_master function in the Ty demux plugin (modules/demux/ty.c) in VLC Media Player 0.9.0 through 0.9.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a TiVo TY media file with a header containing a crafted size value.

The weakness was released 10/21/2008 by Tobias Klein (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-4654. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
