Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Trend Micro OfficeScan 7.3/8.0 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component CGI Program. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in CGI programs in the server in Trend Micro OfficeScan 7.3 Patch 4 build 1367 and other builds before 1374, and 8.0 SP1 Patch 1 before build 3110, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an HTTP POST request containing crafted form data, related to "parsing CGI requests."

The bug was discovered 10/22/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/23/2008 by Dyon Balding with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at trendmicro.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3862 since 08/29/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34490 (Trend Micro OfficeScan HTTP Request Remote Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows, running in the context l and relying on port 8080. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116001 (Trend Micro OfficeScan CGI Parsing Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8737.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46018), Tenable (34490), SecurityFocus (BID 31859†), OSVDB (49275†) and Secunia (SA32005†). The entry VDB-3859 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
