net-snmp 5.2.5/5.3.2.2/5.4 netsnmp_create_subtree_cache input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in net-snmp 5.2.5/5.3.2.2/5.4 (Network Management Software). This affects the function netsnmp_create_subtree_cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the netsnmp_create_subtree_cache function in agent/snmp_agent.c in net-snmp 5.4 before 5.4.2.1, 5.3 before 5.3.2.3, and 5.2 before 5.2.5.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted SNMP GETBULK request, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow, related to the number of responses or repeats.

The bug was discovered 10/31/2008. The weakness was presented 10/31/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-4309 since 09/29/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67761 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : net-snmp (ELSA-2008-0971)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116175 (VMware ESX Server Update for net-snmp and libxml2 (VMSA-2009-0001)).

Upgrading to version 5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6561.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46262), Tenable (67761), SecurityFocus (BID 32020†), OSVDB (49524†) and Secunia (SA32539†).
