A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 8.0 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component YARR Regular Expression Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. YARR, as used in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 8.0, Thunderbird 5.0 through 8.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.6, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted JavaScript.
The weakness was presented 12/20/2011 by Aki Helin as MFSA2011-54 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3661 since 09/23/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57355 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (e3ff776b-2ba6-11e1-93c6-0011856a6e37)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165277 (SUSE Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (openSUSE-SU-2012:0039-2)).
Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
