Trend Micro ServerProtect 5.7/5.58 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Trend Micro ServerProtect 5.7/5.58 (Anti-Malware Software) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in an unspecified procedure in Trend Micro ServerProtect 5.7 and 5.58 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors, possibly related to the product s configuration, a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-0012 and CVE-2008-0013.

The bug was discovered 11/11/2008. The weakness was presented 11/17/2008 with IBM X-Force as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0014 since 12/13/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/15/2025).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116040 (Trend Micro ServerProtect Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (39920), SecurityFocus (BID 32261†), OSVDB (50118†), Secunia (SA32618†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-21021†).
