CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel 2.6.23. Impacted is the function hfs_cat_find_brec. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-5025. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.23 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function hfs_cat_find_brec. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the hfs_cat_find_brec function in fs/hfs/catalog.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.28-rc1 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption or system crash) via an hfs filesystem image with an invalid catalog namelength field, a related issue to CVE-2008-4933.

The bug was discovered 10/15/2008. The weakness was released 11/17/2008 by Eric Sesterhenn as Bug 470769 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5025 since 11/10/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 403 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 37874 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2008:246)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165629 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Kernel (SUSE-SA:2009:008)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46605), Tenable (37874), SecurityFocus (BID 32289†), OSVDB (49863†) and Secunia (SA32918†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-45344, VDB-45132, VDB-44965 and VDB-44962.
