A vulnerability has been found in Sun Java System Identity Manager up to 7.0 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the file /idm/includes/helpServer.jsp. The manipulation of the argument ext with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in idm/includes/helpServer.jsp in Sun Java System Identity Manager 6.0 through 6.0 SP4, 7.0, and 7.1 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files in the filesystem of the IDM server via directory traversal sequences in the ext parameter.
The weakness was disclosed 11/11/2008 by Richard Brain with ProCheckUp Ltd. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5116 since 11/17/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After 2 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:idm/includes/helpServer.jsp it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38695 (Sun Java System Identity Manager ext Parameter Arbitrary File Retrieval), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
