A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apple iPhone OS up to 1.1.2 (Smartphone Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Passcode Lock. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Race condition in the Passcode Lock feature in Apple iPhone OS 2.0 through 2.1 and iPhone OS for iPod touch 2.0 through 2.1 allows physically proximate attackers to remove the lock and launch arbitrary applications by restoring the device from a backup.
The bug was discovered 11/21/2008. The weakness was disclosed 11/21/2008 by Haifei Li (Shadow) with Mozilla Corporation (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4229 since 09/24/2008. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack.
