A vulnerability was found in mailscanner. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
mailscanner 4.55.10 and other versions before 4.74.16-1 might allow local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on certain temporary files used by the (1) f-prot-autoupdate, (2) clamav-autoupdate, (3) panda-autoupdate.new, (4) trend-autoupdate.new, and (5) rav-autoupdate.new scripts in /etc/MailScanner/autoupdate/, a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-5140.
The weakness was presented 12/03/2008 by Raphael Geissert (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-5312 since 12/03/2008. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
Upgrading to version 4.69.9-3 eliminates this vulnerability.
