The "Java Update" feature for Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for Sun JDK and JRE 6 Update 10 and earlier; JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 16 and earlier; and SDK and JRE 1.4.2_18 and earlier does not verify the signature of the JRE that is downloaded, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via DNS man-in-the-middle attacks.
The bug was discovered 12/03/2008. The weakness was shared 12/03/2008 by Sebastian Apelt with Virtual Security Research (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8606.
