A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Red Hat JBoss 5.1.2/5.2.0/5.3.0 (Application Server Software). This issue affects the function getConnection of the file cache/loader/NonManagedConnectionFactory.java of the component Cache. The NonManagedConnectionFactory in JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP) 5.1.2 and 5.2.0, Web Platform (EWP) 5.1.2 and 5.2.0, and BRMS Platform before 5.3.1 logs the username and password in cleartext when an exception is thrown, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information by reading the log file.
The weakness was disclosed 01/11/2012 as JBCACHE-1612 as confirmed posting (JBoss Issue Tracker). It is possible to read the advisory at issues.jboss.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0034 since 12/07/2011. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1552 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64078 (RHEL 6 : JBoss EAP (RHSA-2013:0191)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72350), Tenable (64078), SecurityFocus (BID 51392†), OSVDB (78259†) and Secunia (SA47521†).
