MPlayer up to 1.0 Rc1 demux_open_vqf memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the demux_open_vqf function in libmpdemux/demux_vqf.c in MPlayer 1.0 rc2 before r28150 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed TwinVQ file.

The bug was discovered 12/14/2008. The weakness was published 12/16/2008 by Tobias Klein (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-5616 since 12/16/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35280 (FreeBSD : mplayer -- twinvq processing buffer overflow vulnerability (7c5bd5b8-d652-11dd-a765-0030843d3802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 1.0 Pre7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8896.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47331), Tenable (35280), SecurityFocus (BID 32822†), OSVDB (50838†) and Secunia (SA33136†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
