The loadBindingDocument function in Mozilla Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.19, Thunderbird 2.x before 2.0.0.19, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.14 does not perform any security checks related to the same-domain policy, which allows remote attackers to read or access data from other domains via crafted XBL bindings.

The weakness was released 12/17/2008 by Jesse Ruderman (moz_bug_r_a4) as Bug 379959 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-5503 since 12/12/2008. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43721 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2008:1036)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
