Mozilla Firefox 3.x before 3.0.5 and 2.x before 2.0.0.19, Thunderbird 2.x before 2.0.0.19, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.14 does not properly parse URLs with leading whitespace or control characters, which might allow remote attackers to misrepresent URLs and simplify phishing attacks.

The weakness was released 12/17/2008 by Jesse Ruderman (moz_bug_r_a4) as Bug 460803 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5508 since 12/12/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43721 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2008:1036)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165625 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla (SUSE-SA:2009:002)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
