Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function __qdisc_run. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The __qdisc_run function in net/sched/sch_generic.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.25 on SMP machines allows local users to cause a denial of service (soft lockup) by sending a large amount of network traffic, as demonstrated by multiple simultaneous invocations of the Netperf benchmark application in UDP_STREAM mode.
The bug was discovered 12/23/2008. The weakness was shared 12/24/2008 as Bug 477744 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-5713 since 12/24/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1010 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38722 (Debian DSA-1794-1 : linux-2.6 - denial of service/privilege escalation/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116202 (Red Hat Update for Kernel (RHSA-2009:0264-9)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47588), Exploit-DB (32682), Tenable (38722), SecurityFocus (BID 32985†) and OSVDB (51476†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
