Freedesktop Xdg-utils 1.0 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Freedesktop Xdg-utils 1.0. Affected is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Interaction error in xdg-open allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by sending a file with a dangerous MIME type but using a safe type that Firefox sends to xdg-open, which causes xdg-open to process the dangerous file type through automatic type detection, as demonstrated by overwriting the .desktop file.

The bug was discovered 01/03/2009. The weakness was shared 01/07/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-0068 since 01/07/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35577 (Slackware 12.2 / current : xdg-utils (SSA:2009-033-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47816), Tenable (35577), SecurityFocus (BID 33137†), OSVDB (53448†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-20387†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
