A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.2.21 (Web Server). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file protocol.c. CVE summarizes:
protocol.c in the Apache HTTP Server 2.2.x through 2.2.21 does not properly restrict header information during construction of Bad Request (aka 400) error documents, which allows remote attackers to obtain the values of HTTPOnly cookies via vectors involving a (1) long or (2) malformed header in conjunction with crafted web script.
The weakness was disclosed 01/26/2012 by Norman Hippert with Norman (Website). The advisory is available at h20000.www2.hp.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0053 since 12/07/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78168 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : Apache vulnerability (SOL15273)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 105728 (EOL/Obsolete Software: Apache HTTP Server 2.2.x).
Upgrading to version 2.2.22-dev eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12139.
