This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Domain Controller. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (connectivity loss) or steal credentials via a 1Ch registration that causes WINS to change the domain controller to point to a malicious server. NOTE: this problem may be limited when Windows 95/98 clients are used, or if the primary domain controller becomes unavailable.

The weakness was released 01/14/2009 by David Byrne (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www2.sans.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1593 since 01/14/2009. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 70007 (WINS Domain Controller Spoofing Vulnerability - Zero Day).
