IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 (Database Software). Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in IBM DB2 8 before FP17a, 9.1 before FP6a, and 9.5 before FP3a allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted CONNECT data stream.

The bug was discovered 01/13/2009. The weakness was presented 01/16/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-0172 since 01/16/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19539 (IBM DB2 Malicious "CONNECT" Data Stream Denial of Service Vulnerability (IZ36534)).

Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8688.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47931), Exploit-DB (8344), SecurityFocus (BID 33258†), OSVDB (52619†) and Secunia (SA33529†). See VDB-45949 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
