Mozilla SeaMonkey up to 2.0.4 Random Number Generator Math.random authentication spoofing

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla SeaMonkey (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Math.random of the component Random Number Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The Math.random function in the JavaScript implementation in Mozilla Firefox 3.5.x before 3.5.10 and 3.6.x before 3.6.4, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.5, uses a random number generator that is seeded only once per browser session, which makes it easier for remote attackers to track a user, or trick a user into acting upon a spoofed pop-up message, by calculating the seed value, related to a "temporary footprint" and an "in-session phishing attack."

The weakness was released 01/20/2009 by Amit Klein as Bug 475585 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5913. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68055 (Oracle Linux 5 : firefox (ELSA-2010-0501)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118158 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2010:0500, RHSA-2010:0501)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48173), Tenable (68055), SecurityFocus (BID 33276†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26144†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-4093, VDB-45963, VDB-45962 and VDB-45960. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
