gitweb/gitweb.perl in gitweb in Git 1.6.x before 1.6.0.6, 1.5.6.x before 1.5.6.6, 1.5.5.x before 1.5.5.6, 1.5.4.x before 1.5.4.7, and other versions after 1.4.3 allows local repository owners to execute arbitrary commands by modifying the diff.external configuration variable and executing a crafted gitweb query.

The weakness was published 12/20/2008 (Website). The advisory is available at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-5916 since 01/20/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
