A vulnerability was found in Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 17.0.1224 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function ApiThread of the file TmPfw.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in the ApiThread function in the firewall service (aka TmPfw.exe) in Trend Micro Network Security Component (NSC) modules, as used in Trend Micro OfficeScan 8.0 SP1 Patch 1 and Internet Security 2007 and 2008 17.0.1224, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a packet with a small value in an unspecified size field.
The bug was discovered 01/20/2009. The weakness was published 01/21/2009 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3865 since 08/29/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
