IBM AIX 5.3/6.1/7.1 TCP/IP Stack denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM AIX 5.3/6.1/7.1 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component TCP/IP Stack. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The TCP implementation in IBM AIX 5.3, 6.1, and 7.1, when the Large Send Offload option is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and panic) via an unspecified series of packets.

The issue has been introduced in 08/01/2004. The weakness was released 02/03/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared at aix.software.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0194 since 12/14/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2742 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72848 (AIX 6.1 TL 6 : bos.net.tcp.client (U849877)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119927 (IBM AIX "TCP large send offload" Denial of Service Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at aix.software.ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72562), Tenable (72848), SecurityFocus (BID 51864†), OSVDB (78887†) and Secunia (SA47865†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
