ISC BIND Domain Name Resolver privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in ISC BIND (Domain Name Software) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Domain Name Resolver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The resolver in ISC BIND 9 through 9.8.1-P1 overwrites cached server names and TTL values in NS records during the processing of a response to an A record query, which allows remote attackers to trigger continued resolvability of revoked domain names via a "ghost domain names" attack.

The weakness was presented 02/07/2012 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vmware.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1033 since 02/07/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69691 (Amazon Linux AMI : bind (ALAS-2012-84)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350663 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for bind: ALAS-2012-084).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73053), Tenable (69691), SecurityFocus (BID 51898†), OSVDB (78916†) and Secunia (SA47884†). See VDB-6967 for similar entry. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
