A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in ISC BIND up to 8.2.3 (Domain Name Software). Affected is the function EVP_VerifyFinal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-287. Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) BIND 9.6.0 and earlier does not properly check the return value from the OpenSSL EVP_VerifyFinal function, which allows remote attackers to bypass validation of the certificate chain via a malformed SSL/TLS signature, a similar vulnerability to CVE-2008-5077 and CVE-2009-0025.
The weakness was disclosed 01/26/2009 by Security Team with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is available at isc.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-0265 since 01/26/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36346 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : bind (MDVSA-2009:037)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15073 (ISC BIND Security Bypass Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
