Sun OpenSolaris up to Snv 85 Terminal race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Sun OpenSolaris up to Snv 85 (Operating System). This affects an unknown code block of the component Terminal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the pseudo-terminal (aka pty) driver module in Sun Solaris 8 through 10, and OpenSolaris before snv_103, allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) via unspecified vectors related to lack of "properly sequenced code" in ptc and ptsl.

The bug was discovered 01/22/2009. The weakness was published 01/26/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-0268 since 01/26/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35569 (Solaris 10 (sparc) : 140383-01), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116189 (Sun Solaris Pseudo-Terminal Driver Denial of Service (1019948.1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48179), Tenable (35569), SecurityFocus (BID 33406†), OSVDB (52541†) and Secunia (SA33708†). Similar entry is available at VDB-46064. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
