Alt-N MDaemon up to 6.8.5 Form2Raw.exe From stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Alt-N MDaemon up to 6.8.5 (Mail Server Software). This issue affects some unknown processing of the file Form2Raw.exe. The manipulation of the argument From with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in FORM2RAW.exe in Alt-N MDaemon 6.5.2 through 6.8.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long From parameter to Form2Raw.cgi.

The bug was discovered 12/30/2003. The weakness was released 12/29/2003 by Pejamn Davarzani and Behrang Fouladi with Hat-Squad Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at hat-squad.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-1200 since 05/04/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 50086 (Alt-N MDaemon/WorldClient Form2Raw Raw Message Handler Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityfocus.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2434. In this case the pattern /form2raw.cgi is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3501.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (14097), Exploit-DB (23501), SecurityFocus (BID 9317†), OSVDB (3255†) and Secunia (SA10512†). securityfocus.com is providing further details.
