Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in SIR GNUBoard 4.31.03 (Forum Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file common.php. The manipulation of the argument g4_path with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in common.php in SIR GNUBoard 4.31.03 allows remote attackers to include and execute arbitrary local files via a .. (dot dot) in the g4_path parameter. NOTE: in some environments, this can be leveraged for remote code execution via a data: URI or a UNC share pathname.
The weakness was published 01/27/2009 by Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at milw0rm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0290 since 01/27/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed by flyh4t and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:common.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
