Details
A vulnerability was found in Free Download Manager 3.0. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in the torrent parsing implementation in Free Download Manager (FDM) 2.5 Build 758 and 3.0 Build 844 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a long file name within a torrent file, (2) a long tracker URL in a torrent file, or (3) a long comment in a torrent file.
The bug was discovered 02/02/2009. The weakness was presented 02/03/2009 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0184 since 01/20/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/21/2025).
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116173 (Free Download Manager Multiple Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12533.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48410), Exploit-DB (10009), SecurityFocus (BID 33555†), OSVDB (54033†) and Secunia (SA33524†). See VDB-46257 for similar entry. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
