Details
A vulnerability was found in TightVnc 1.3.9 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ClientConnection::CheckBufferSize of the file ClientConnection.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple integer signedness errors in (1) UltraVNC 1.0.2 and 1.0.5 and (2) TightVnc 1.3.9 allow remote VNC servers to cause a denial of service (heap corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a large length value in a message, related to the (a) ClientConnection::CheckBufferSize and (b) ClientConnection::CheckFileZipBufferSize functions in ClientConnection.cpp.
The weakness was disclosed 02/04/2009 by Alfredo Ortega with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0388 since 02/02/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by desi in Python and been published 5 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35702 (TightVNC Viewer < 1.3.10 Multiple Integer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116181 (Multiple VNC Clients Multiple Integer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48466), Exploit-DB (8024), Tenable (35702), SecurityFocus (BID 33568†) and OSVDB (55423†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
