A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox 10.0 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function nsXBLDocumentInfo::ReadPrototypeBindings of the component XBL Binding. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Use-after-free vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox 10.x before 10.0.1, Thunderbird 10.x before 10.0.1, and SeaMonkey 2.7 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors that trigger failure of an nsXBLDocumentInfo::ReadPrototypeBindings function call, related to the cycle collector s access to a hash table containing a stale XBL binding.
The weakness was published 02/10/2012 by Olli Pettay as MFSA2012-10 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0452 since 01/09/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74857 (openSUSE Security Update : MozillaFirefox / MozillaThunderbird / seamonkey / etc (openSUSE-2012-92)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195258 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Thunderbird Vulnerabilities (USN-1369-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
