Python 2.7.5/2.7.6/3.3.5 JSON _json.c index memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Python 2.7.5/2.7.6/3.3.5 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file _json.c of the component JSON Module. The manipulation of the argument index with the input value -1 leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.

The weakness was presented 06/23/2014 by Guido Vranken as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4616 since 06/24/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78323 (Amazon Linux AMI : python27 (ALAS-2014-380)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350355 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for python-simplejson: ALAS-2014-374).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93933), Tenable (78323), SecurityFocus (BID 68119†), OSVDB (108354†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45531†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
