A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Bugzilla up to 2.19.0 (Bug Tracking Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file quips.cgi. The manipulation of the argument action with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Bugzilla 3.2 before 3.2 RC2, 3.0 before 3.0.6, 2.22 before 2.22.6, 2.20 before 2.20.7, and other versions after 2.17.4 allows remote authenticated users to bypass moderation to approve and disapprove quips via a direct request to quips.cgi with the action parameter set to "approve."
The bug was discovered 11/06/2008. The weakness was presented 02/09/2009 by Alex (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-6098 since 02/09/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 95 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38079 (Fedora 10 : bugzilla-3.2.2-2.fc10 (2009-2417)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116301 (Fedora Update for Bugzilla (FEDORA-2009-2418,FEDORA-2009-2417)).
Upgrading to version 2.19.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
