A vulnerability was found in Moodle (Learning Management Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing in the library course/lib.php. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in course/lib.php in Moodle 1.6 before 1.6.9, 1.7 before 1.7.7, 1.8 before 1.8.8, and 1.9 before 1.9.4 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via crafted log table information that is not properly handled when it is displayed in a log report.
The bug was discovered 02/04/2009. The weakness was disclosed 02/09/2009 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0500 since 02/09/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:course/lib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35691 (Debian DSA-1724-1 : moodle - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175148 (Debian Security Update for Moodle (DSA-1724)).
Upgrading to version 1.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
