Details
A vulnerability has been found in net-snmp Net Snmp up to 5.1 (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function netsnmp_udp_fmtaddr in the library snmplib/snmpUDPDomain.c of the component Access Restriction. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The netsnmp_udp_fmtaddr function (snmplib/snmpUDPDomain.c) in net-snmp 5.0.9 through 5.4.2.1, when using TCP wrappers for client authorization, does not properly parse hosts.allow rules, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions and execute SNMP queries, related to "source/destination IP address confusion."
The bug was discovered 01/11/2009. The weakness was presented 02/12/2009 as Bug 485211 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-6123 since 02/12/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67806 (Oracle Linux 3 : net-snmp (ELSA-2009-0295)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165632 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2009:012)).
