Details
A vulnerability was found in ProFTPD 1.3.1 (File Transfer Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component mod_sql_mysql. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
ProFTPD Server 1.3.1, with NLS support enabled, allows remote attackers to bypass SQL injection protection mechanisms via invalid, encoded multibyte characters, which are not properly handled in (1) mod_sql_mysql and (2) mod_sql_postgres.
The weakness was published 02/12/2009 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-0543 since 02/12/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17753 (OpenSSL < 0.9.7c ASN.1 Decoding Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27296 (ProFTPD Character Encoding SQL Injection Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48558), Exploit-DB (8037), Tenable (17753), SecurityFocus (BID 33650†) and OSVDB (51954†). Similar entry is available at VDB-46499. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
