A vulnerability was found in Ruby 1.8/1.9 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function OCSP_basic_verify of the component OpenSSL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. ext/openssl/ossl_ocsp.c in Ruby 1.8 and 1.9 does not properly check the return value from the OCSP_basic_verify function, which might allow remote attackers to successfully present an invalid X.509 certificate, possibly involving a revoked certificate.
The weakness was released 02/20/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at mandriva.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0642 since 02/18/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
