Details
A vulnerability was found in vim 7.2a.10 (Word Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component System functions. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Netrw plugin 125 in netrw.vim in Vim 7.2a.10 allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via shell metacharacters in filenames used by the execute and system functions within the (1) mz and (2) mc commands, as demonstrated by the netrw.v2 and netrw.v3 test cases. NOTE: this issue reportedly exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2008-2712.
The bug was discovered 07/07/2008. The weakness was presented 02/21/2009 (Website). The advisory is available at rdancer.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-3076 since 07/08/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 179 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
