A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in IBM WebSphere (Application Server Software) (unknown version). Affected is an unknown code block of the component WS-Security Enabled JAX-WS Applications. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The MHTML protocol handler in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 does not properly handle a MIME format in a request for content blocks in a document, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via a crafted web site that is visited in Internet Explorer, aka "MHTML Mime-Formatted Request Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 03/01/2012 by 80vul (Website). The advisory is available at ibm.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0096. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by 80vul and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of allinurl:wps/portal/ login it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53383 (MS11-026: Vulnerability in MHTML Could Allow Information Disclosure (2503658)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90679 (Microsoft MHTML Information Disclosure Vulnerability (KB2501696, MS11-026)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11779.
