Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ext4_fill_super. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The ext4_fill_super function in fs/ext4/super.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.27 before 2.6.27.19 and 2.6.28 before 2.6.28.7 does not validate the superblock configuration, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) by attempting to mount a crafted ext4 filesystem.
The issue has been introduced in 10/09/2008. The weakness was released 02/27/2009 (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0748. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 139 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43779 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2009:1243)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175171 (Debian Security Update for Linux-2.6 (DSA-1749)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
