A vulnerability was found in OpenSC. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
OpenSC before 0.11.7 allows physically proximate attackers to bypass intended PIN requirements and read private data objects via a (1) low level APDU command or (2) debugging tool, as demonstrated by reading the 4601 or 4701 file with the opensc-explorer or opensc-tool program.
The bug was discovered 02/26/2009. The weakness was presented 03/02/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at opensc-project.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-0368 since 01/29/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36781 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : opensc (MDVSA-2009:089)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175158 (Debian Security Update for Opensc (DSA-1734)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
