Linux Kernel 2.6.28.4 shm_get_stat input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.28.4 and classified as problematic. This affects the function shm_get_stat. This manipulation causes input validation. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0859. There is not any exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.28.4 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function shm_get_stat. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The shm_get_stat function in ipc/shm.c in the shm subsystem in the Linux kernel before 2.6.28.5, when CONFIG_SHMEM is disabled, misinterprets the data type of an inode, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system hang) via an SHM_INFO shmctl call, as demonstrated by running the ipcs program.

The bug was discovered 02/12/2009. The weakness was released 03/09/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-0859 since 03/09/2009. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 74 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38668 (Debian DSA-1787-1 : linux-2.6.24 - denial of service/privilege escalation/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165644 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2009:028)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49229), Tenable (38668), SecurityFocus (BID 34020†), OSVDB (52755†) and Secunia (SA34981†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-45624, VDB-45355, VDB-47924 and VDB-47913. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
