Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (version unknown). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The WINS server in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 and Server 2003 SP1 and SP2 does not restrict registration of the (1) "wpad" and (2) "isatap" NetBIOS names, which allows remote authenticated users to hijack the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) and Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol (ISATAP) features, and conduct man-in-the-middle attacks by spoofing a proxy server or ISATAP route, by registering one of these names in the WINS database, aka "WPAD WINS Server Registration Vulnerability," a related issue to CVE-2007-1692.
The weakness was shared 03/11/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-0094 since 01/07/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35824 (MS09-008: Vulnerabilities in DNS and WINS Server Could Allow Spoofing (962238)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90481 (Vulnerabilities in DNS and WINS Server Could Allow Spoofing (MS09-008)).
