IBM Director up to 5.20.3 CIMListener path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in IBM Director up to 5.20.3. The affected element is an unknown function of the file CIMListener. Such manipulation leads to path traversal. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2009-0880. In addition, an exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM Director up to 5.20.3. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file CIMListener. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the CIM server in IBM Director before 5.20.3 Service Update 2 on Windows allows remote attackers to load and execute arbitrary local DLL code via a .. (dot dot) in a /CIMListener/ URI in an M-POST request.

The weakness was presented 03/12/2009 by Bernhard Mueller with SEC Consult Vulnerability Lab (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www14.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0880 since 03/12/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

A public exploit has been developed by kingcope and been published 5 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19422.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49286), Exploit-DB (23074), SecurityFocus (BID 34065†), OSVDB (52616†) and Secunia (SA34212†). See VDB-47107 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
