A vulnerability has been found in Joomla CMS up to 1.7.x/2.5.1 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file redirect.php of the component Redirect Plugin. The manipulation of the argument search with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. SQL injection vulnerability in Joomla! 1.7.x and 2.5.x before 2.5.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 03/05/2012 by Colin as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with Joomla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1116 since 02/14/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:redirect.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12732 (Joomla! Blind SQL Injection Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
