Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in SlySoft AnyDVD 6.5.2.2. This affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Elaborate Bytes ElbyCDIO.sys 6.0.2.0 and earlier, as distributed in SlySoft AnyDVD before 6.5.2.6, Virtual CloneDrive 5.4.2.3 and earlier, CloneDVD 2.9.2.0 and earlier, and CloneCD 5.3.1.3 and earlier, uses the METHOD_NEITHER communication method for IOCTLs and does not properly validate a buffer associated with the Irp object, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) via a crafted IOCTL call.
The bug was discovered 03/12/2009. The weakness was published 03/14/2009 by Positive Technologies with Positive Technologies Research Team (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-0824 since 03/05/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116289 (SlySoft Multiple Products ElbyCDIO.sys Denial of Service Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49232), Exploit-DB (32850), SecurityFocus (BID 34103†), OSVDB (52679†) and Secunia (SA34269†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
