Horde Groupware 1.1.2 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Horde Groupware 1.1.2 (Groupware Software). Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in framework/Image/Image.php in Horde before 3.2.4 and 3.3.3 and Horde Groupware before 1.1.5 allows remote attackers to include and execute arbitrary local files via directory traversal sequences in the Horde_Image driver name.

The weakness was disclosed 03/17/2009 by skysbsb (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-0932 since 03/17/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

A public exploit has been developed by skysbsb and been published 3 years after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35554 (Horde Horde_Image::factory driver Argument Local File Inclusion), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118223 (Fedora Update for Horde (FEDORA-2010-5563)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48286), Exploit-DB (16154), Tenable (35554), SecurityFocus (BID 33491†) and Secunia (SA33695†). The entries VDB-45971, VDB-44020, VDB-44019 and VDB-47171 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
